WindowPin

Free for Windows

Sticky Notes stick to the screen. This one sticks to the window.

The Sticky Notes app in Windows, and most other desktop note apps, put a note at a coordinate on your desktop. A note parked in the top right stays there no matter which window you are looking at. If you keep one or two notes and they say "buy milk", that is fine. It stops working when the note is about a particular window: move that window and the note stays behind, minimise it and the note is left floating on its own.

No installer · a single executable · touches nothing in the registry · v2.6.0

What is actually different

A normal note app puts a note at a place on the screen. WindowPin attaches it to a window. Drag the window and the note keeps its offset and follows; minimise and it hides with it; restore and it comes back. Close the window today and open it tomorrow, and the app recognises the window and re-attaches the note.

When Sticky Notes is the better choice

If the note has nothing to do with a specific window, or you want the same note on several PCs, or you need it on your phone, the built-in app with account sync is the better fit. WindowPin does not sync anything — notes stay on this PC.

When it has to be the window

When you work with many windows of the same program. Six spreadsheets, four browser windows, a stack of ticket windows: once the taskbar icons stop telling them apart, a note only helps if it travels with its window. Even a one-line index label on each window cuts down on typing into the wrong one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my existing Sticky Notes?

There is no automatic import; moving them means copy and paste. WindowPin notes can be exported to a file and imported back, so moving to a new PC keeps them.

Is it free? Are there ads?

It is free, and no advertising is placed inside your notes. Turn off news in the settings and the app connects to no server at all.
