Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. There is no limited edition and no trial period, and no advertising is placed inside your notes.

Does it need to be installed?

No. Download one executable and run it. It does not ask for administrator rights and does not write to the registry. Only the optional desktop right-click menu writes anything, and only under the current user.

Where are notes stored?

In %APPDATA%\WindowPin on this PC. Nothing is written into your documents or source files. Notes can be exported to a file and imported back, so moving to another PC keeps them.

What gets sent to a server?

By default, update checks and news only. Turn off news in the settings and the app contacts no server at all. Note content never leaves your PC under any setting.

If I close the window, is the note gone?

No. The note survives, stays hidden while its window is missing, and re-attaches itself when the same window opens again — including after restarting the app.

Can it tell apart several windows of the same program?

It looks at the executable name, the window class, the title and when the window was created. If that is not enough to decide, it asks you to pick rather than quietly attaching to the wrong window. For windows whose titles keep changing, set a keyword the title always contains.

Can I pin several notes to one window?

Yes. Several notes and labels can share a window, and they all come back to their places when the app restarts.

Does it work with dual monitors and virtual desktops?

Yes. Move the window to another monitor and the note follows, at the right size even when the two screens use different scaling. Move the target window to another virtual desktop and the note goes with it.

Which versions of Windows are supported?

Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit.

Can I run it on a work computer?

There is no installation step, so in most cases you simply run it. Company policy varies, so check your own IT rules first.

How do I install it?

Run the file you downloaded. It is also available through winget and Scoop. The install guide walks through each route step by step.
